Why fitness no-shows happen
Unlike medical appointments, fitness classes are intrinsically motivated. On days of low motivation - tired after work, sore from a previous session - the calculus tips toward staying home. There is no external obligation beyond sunk-cost guilt.
ClassPass users book multiple classes and keep the ones that fit their week. The platform has built-in late-cancellation fees to counteract this, but multi-class-per-week overcommitment is still the dominant driver of boutique studio no-shows.
Group fitness at traditional gyms has historically been free with membership, creating a culture where no-showing has zero consequence. Boutique studios that charge per class have significantly lower no-show rates than included-in-membership classes.
Personal training no-show rates are lower (15-25%) because the trainer-client relationship creates interpersonal accountability. No-showing on a personal trainer feels more personal than missing a group class.
Personal trainer no-show policy template
"I require 24 hours advance notice for session cancellations. Sessions cancelled within 24 hours are charged at the full session rate and will be deducted from your package or charged to your card on file. No-show sessions are charged at the full rate with no credit or makeup option. This policy protects my time and ensures availability for clients who keep their commitments."
Present this in writing before the first session. Verbal-only policies are consistently inconsistently enforced.
